Drum & Bass

Drum & bass DJ sets: chopped breaks, sub-heavy pressure, and 170 BPM drive. Drum and bass emerged in early-1990s UK out of jungle and breakbeat hardcore, defined by 165-180 BPM tempos, chopped breakbeats (often the Amen break), and deep sub-bass lines. Goldie's 1995 album Timeless, LTJ Bukem's atmospheric Good Looking Records output, and Roni Size & Reprazent's Mercury-winning New Forms (1997) shaped its first wave. With MC Tonn Piper on the mic, this is the double-drop machine at full power in front of a crowd that treats it like scripture.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between drum & bass and dubstep?

Drum & bass is much faster than dubstep, typically running around 170 to 175 BPM. It relies on rapid breakbeats and rolling basslines, while dubstep uses slower, half-time rhythms and heavier bass drops. Both are major genres within UK bass music.

What are the different styles of drum & bass?

The main styles include liquid, neurofunk, jungle, and jump-up. Liquid is melodic and soulful, neurofunk is darker and more technical, jungle emphasizes breakbeats and reggae influences, and jump-up focuses on high-energy party rhythms.

Who are the essential drum & bass artists?

Andy C remains the most influential figure in drum & bass, alongside artists like Sub Focus, Wilkinson, and Netsky. For heavier sounds, Noisia helped define neurofunk and continues to influence producers across the genre.
