Culoe De Song began DJing alongside Black Coffee, worked with Black Coffee on 100 Zulu Warriors, and signed to Black Coffee's Soulistic Music label. Culoe De Song was chosen as a participant when the Red Bull Music Academy came to Barcelona in 2008. A Giant Leap, the 2009 debut album from Culoe De Song, earned a nomination in the new artist category at the 2010 South African Music Awards. Culoe De Song is signed to Dixon's Innervisions label and has also released records on Kompakt, Defected and Watergate. Mixmag presented the Lab NYC booking as Culoe De Song's first appearance in the series, introducing him as an artist who carried South Africa's house sound abroad.
