RICHIE HAWTIN Mixmag Live @ Output NYC
Richie Hawtin headlined Mixmag Live at Output in Brooklyn on Tuesday 29 November, the first edition of the Mixmag Live series to be held outside the UK. At the Output edition of Mixmag Live, Richie Hawtin presented the MODEL 1 mixer made by PLAYdifferently. Mixmag's announcement for the Output night listed Louie Vega, Julia Govor and a live performance from Matador alongside Richie Hawtin, with the doors open from 8pm to 1am. Richie Hawtin was born in Banbury, England, in 1970 and grew up in Canada, later spending time in Detroit. Richie Hawtin first recorded under the Plastikman name in 1993 and started the label M-nus Records in 1998. Richie Hawtin set up his own technology company, PLAYdifferently, in 2016. The Nocturnal Times reported that Output usually enforces a strict ban on filming, so recording the Mixmag Live sets at the Brooklyn club was an exception. The Nocturnal Times wrote that Richie Hawtin stepped up at around half past ten on the Output night, after Julia Govor had opened the evening at 8pm. During Richie Hawtin's set at Output, according to The Nocturnal Times, the coloured lighting gave way to sparse white light and darkness while the music built slowly towards a heavy bass release. Mixmag included the Output edition of Mixmag Live, the series' first visit to North America, in its 2016 round up of moments that made dance music worth celebrating that year.
