What is Dembow?

Dembow is Dominican street music built on a raw, looped version of the dembow riddim: faster, harder, and more insistent than reggaeton, usually topped with chanted, high-energy vocals. Born in Santo Domingo's barrios in the 2000s and named for the Shabba Ranks track that supplied its rhythmic DNA, it is the Dominican Republic's defining urban sound: relentless percussion loops made for dancing, not background listening. Expect raw energy, hypnotic repetition, and a tempo that never lets up.
