A catalog entry can look fine on paper and still fail when a listener presses play. This page publishes one measured rate from a full-catalog IFrame probe, with the method and the date attached, so the number can be cited without inventing a trend.

Of the 6,992 public catalog videos probed on 2026-07-24, 1,663 failed to play in the YouTube IFrame player on a two-pass check (23.8%). 5,329 played. Zero probes were left inconclusive.

What this means for a listener

Nearly one in four of those catalog entries would have opened a player that could not play. That is not a claim about YouTube as a platform in general: it is a claim about this catalog on that day, measured the way a listener actually encounters playback: through the IFrame, on the production origin.

Human curation is what keeps that rate from becoming the listen experience. A curator choosing what to surface, and a catalog that withdraws confirmed dead embeds from public shelves, are why pressing play on Videojam is not the same as rolling a random public YouTube ID. The number above is the reason that work matters, not an argument that embeds are a fragile idea.

Method

  • Harness: scripts/datastudy/scanEmbedPlayability.ts (Playwright).
  • Probe origin: https://videojam.live: real IFrame players on the production site, not a synthetic page.
  • Dead only on a repeated non-playable result (two-pass). A single failure or an ambiguous error is not counted as dead.
  • Population: unresolved public catalog IDs on the probe day (n=6,992 conclusive; inconclusive = 0).
  • Among the dead: player error 151 × 1,572; 150 × 91.

The YouTube Data API status.embeddable field is not this measurement. That field records the uploader's embed setting; a Content ID block can still stop the IFrame. The architectural context is in Why Videojam Does Not Host Video.

What this page does not claim

  • No survival curve

    This is a single-day cross-section, not how long embeds last after admission. Longitudinal attrition is banked separately and is not published here.

  • No trend over time

    One probe date. Re-running the harness later would be a different sample, not an update to this citation without its own method note.

  • Not a verdict on embedding as architecture

    The figure motivates curation and post-admission withdrawal. It does not argue that hosting files would be safer or that embeds should be abandoned.
