alex sensation in Live desde La Sanse, published on 2025-01-19 by Alex Sensation: a long-form Reggaeton set from 2025. The upload is an official channel recording on YouTube, carrying the DJ Sets format tag in the Videojam catalog. VJ CANON EXPAND pass: venue and runtime read from title and channel; event date not verified in this pass.
Forged in Puerto Rico in the 1990s, with roots in Panama's reggae en español, it traveled from underground marquesina parties to the absolute center of global pop. Reggaeton is the dominant sound of Latin urban music: a genre built on the dembow riddim, the boom-ch-boom-chick drum pattern inherited from Jamaican dancehall, fused with hip-hop attitude and Spanish-language melody. Reggaeton music videos ride the dembow riddim that runs the charts: perreo anthems, San Juan heat, and the biggest sound in global pop. DJ Asto goes back to the source with a proper old-school session, the perreo that built the genre before the world caught on. Reggaeton DJ sets: dembow backbone, perreo pressure, and the hits that move floors from San Juan to the world.

Today, dembow also refers to the faster, more stripped-back Dominican genre that evolved from the same beat. Reggaeton was developed in Puerto Rico during the 1990s by blending Jamaican dancehall, Panamanian reggae en español, hip-hop, and Latin influences. Reggaeton is the genre; dembow is the rhythm it was built on. While Panama played a key role in its origins, the sound, culture, and global movement associated with reggaeton emerged from Puerto Rico. You cannot tell the story of reggaeton without Daddy Yankee, and this is the man who took it global playing the hits live. On Videojam, reggaeton sits in the Latin & Urbano lane alongside dembow and Latin house: Caribbean rhythm culture in DJ-set form, not the Afrobeats pop tag. Expect hard rhythm, melodic hooks, and star power. Reggaeton is as much a video culture as a sound, which is exactly why it lives so well in full sets and visuals. For long-form listening, the Reggaeton DJ Sets hub runs continuous mixes built for the room rather than the single track.
What's the difference between reggaeton and dembow?
Reggaeton is the genre; dembow is the rhythm it was built on. Today, dembow also refers to the faster, more stripped-back Dominican genre that evolved from the same beat. In short, reggaeton is the broader style, while dembow is both its rhythmic foundation and its harder Dominican counterpart.
Is reggaeton actually from Puerto Rico?
Yes. Reggaeton was developed in Puerto Rico during the 1990s by blending Jamaican dancehall, Panamanian reggae en español, hip-hop, and Latin influences. While Panama played a key role in its origins, the sound, culture, and global movement associated with reggaeton emerged from Puerto Rico.
Who are the essential reggaeton artists to know?
Start with Daddy Yankee, Tego Calderón, and Don Omar, who helped define reggaeton's early sound. Then explore modern stars like Bad Bunny, J Balvin, Karol G, and Ozuna. For Dominican dembow, El Alfa is one of the genre's most influential artists.
