What is Ambient?

Ambient music was named and popularized by Brian Eno, who coined the term in the mid-1970s.^[1] Rather than melody or rhythm, it emphasizes tone and atmosphere over traditional musical structure.^[2] Eno's own guiding idea was that the music should work at many levels of attention, staying as ignorable as it is interesting.^[3]
