What is Baile Funk?

Baile funk, also called funk carioca, took shape in the 1980s in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro.[1] It grew out of Miami bass and freestyle records that Rio DJs adapted for local sound systems and parties.[2] Tempos vary by substyle; the slower rasteirinha strain rests around 96 BPM.[3]
