What is Merengue?

Merengue traces its origins to the land of El Cibao in the Dominican Republic.[1] It is built on fast arrangements with a 2/4 beat.[2] Traditional merengue bands play it on a diatonic accordion, a two sided tambora drum and a güira scraper.[3]
