Afro house travelled from Johannesburg basements to every terrace on the circuit, and these are the sets that carried it. Chosen for the ones that moved the sound forward, not the ones that arrived once it was safe.

Black Coffee at Mixmag Live, Village Underground in East London, July 2015: a three-hour set streamed and filmed by Mixmag. The South African DJ was a year away from playing Coachella and seven from his Grammy for Subconsciously. It keeps the long form intact, South African house given three unhurried hours in a London room, and it shows how he builds a whole night rather than a peak.

Black Coffee for Cercle at Salle Wagram in Paris, filmed in January 2018 in the room Cercle calls the city's oldest ballroom. Seventy minutes of the sound Cercle's notes call Afropolitan house, played in a hall built for another century's dancing. Four years later his album Subconsciously won the Grammy for Best Dance/Electronic Album. This is the set to show anyone who asks what afro house looks like in a grand room.

Episode six of Kunye, the livestream series Shimza launched in 2020 to film South African DJs in South African locations, with Da Capo at the decks in August 2021. The Seshego-born producer of the double platinum album Indigo Child plays an hour of afro house. Kunye was built so the scene could tell its own story, and this episode is that idea working.
Keinemusik's &ME, Rampa and Adam Port on the Mayan Warrior art car at Burning Man 2022, two and a half hours published by Mayan Warrior itself. The Berlin collective was founded in 2009, and Port blends house with African music; this is that blend on an art car sound system. Two years later his single Move, released on Keinemusik, went to number one in several European countries.
Sun-El Musician in Mixmag's The Lab Johannesburg in June 2022, on the Venue Thirteen rooftop, in the season Mixmag and Budweiser relaunched the series. The producer behind the album Africa to the World and the label El World Music plays close to ninety minutes of afro house in Johannesburg. The genre at home, played by one of its own.
Caiiro and Enoo Napa back to back in Mixmag's The Lab Johannesburg, Venue Thirteen, July 2022. Mixmag billed Caiiro, from Mpumalanga, for afro house and deep, techy productions, and Enoo Napa for dark, synth-led afro tech. Two strands of the South African sound share one booth for close to ninety minutes, which is why it earns a place here.
Keinemusik closing the mts Dance Arena at EXIT festival in July 2023, with Rampa, Adam Port and &ME booked for the final morning. EXIT's own preview promised the crew for at least six hours counting the after party, and the festival published nearly three of them in full. A year later Adam Port's Move took the collective's sound to number one in several European countries.
Shimza for Cercle at the Citadelle de Sisteron in France, July 2024, a fourteenth-century fortress overlooking the town. The Tembisa-born DJ, who built Kunye so South African artists could tell their own story, plays two hours here and ends on Citadelle, the track Cercle Records released from the show. Afro house in a fortress, played by one of the people who built its platforms.

Culoe De Song at Boiler Room and Ballantine's Stay True South Africa on 5 March 2015, at Constitution Hill in Johannesburg, streamed live to viewers in 141 countries. The Eshowe-born producer, whose The Bright Forest on Innervisions took him to Europe in 2009, shared the bill with Black Coffee, Shimza and Black Motion, and gave his wooden mask performance its South African debut. Shimza in Mixmag's The Lab Johannesburg in June 2019, weeks after Mixmag and BUDX opened the Lab in the city. Mixmag introduced the Tembisa DJ as one of the leaders of house music in Africa for over a decade, with records due on Cadenza and Knee Deep In Sound; that year he was named Best Male DJ at the South African Dance Music Awards.
